The underlying causes of difficult behaviour or persistent absence are often emotional or social. By focusing on these, instead of just behavioural outcomes, students can start to manage their own behaviour in a positive way .
Theatre in Education is an excellent tool for engaging students with SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) issues. Theatre encourages students to become emotionally connected with the characters and their problems in a unique way. Through interactive workshops the issues are then developed and fully explored by the group using drama techniques and kinesthtic exercises.
Performance in Education's SEAL programme focusses on:
Self regulation, managing feelings and how to display emotion in an appropriate and healthy way
Motivation, what success means and the importance of self esteem
Social skills and how speaking, listening and body language can make a difference
Self-awareness, how to recognise personal success and highlight areas for improvement
Empathy and the importance of considering events from others points of view, investigating how an action can have far reaching and differing consequences.
This project is designed for Key Stage 3 & 4 and links directly with National Curriculum aims and guidelines for PSHEE: Personal Wellbeing and Citizenship.
